By D I did a post a few years ago called Freeballing which talked about freeform finding a shot when they don’t really know what they want. This happens when you usually have a montage piece and you find shots as they happen. I recently (last night) had a chance to revisit this situation and as it turns out, had a lot of fun doing it. This is literally when you as a dolly grip get a chance to be creative and, if you’re experienced, know what they might need in editing and can deliver. The setup was a mission control type room with a main character facing a huge screen. We had a technocrane swooping around over the various desks and my camera on a stabilized head “mowing the lawn” in front of him. As the scene unfolded, my main job was to stay out of the crane shot and keep them out of my shot on a longer lens. The instructions from the DP were to travel in on an angle and then travel out on a mirror angle. as this happened, and the crane shot changed, I had an opportunity to find shots. If the crane camera was on the right side of frame, I decided to give them a left to right tighter shot, which I knew they didn’t have yet.have but would be valuable. Although the DP or operator hadn’t really given me instructions, I saw an opportunity and took it. After we cut and moved on, the DP came up and said, “That was crafty.” I said , “Crappy?” and he said ,”No, crafty.” And I knew I did the right thing. This reinforced to me the importance of experience for a dolly grip. I knew what they didn’t have already, but would probably need and → continue…

The 30 Tensest Movie Scenes of All Time

By Richard Austin

Tension or suspense is one of the greatest things about literature and film. It allows us to safely explore our innermost fears. We can experience these emotions and feel the tightening of our stomachs from the safety of a chair in the knowledge that it will end and we will be safe.

During a film, there are moments that make you inch forward a little in your chair. There are moments that make you grip the armrest, bite your nails, hold your breath or do any number of other things. If you feel anything for the characters on screen, you will share their distress in certain situations and you will feel nervous for them. This suspense can be achieved in a number of ways by the film makers: the skillful application of music, specific lighting arrangements, precise camera work and a great script.

Some moments combine all these things to create magical moments that make the viewer bristle with anxiety. Alfred Hitchcock explained the difference between surprise and suspense. Having exciting things like explosions in your film is one thing, and they can give the audience 15 seconds of surprise. If you do things right and show the audience the right things at the right time, you can give them fifteen minutes of suspense leading up to that explosion. These are some of the best examples of scenes that contain that tension.

The 15 Best LGBT Movies of the 21st Century

By David Zou

Since the turn of the century, LGBT filmmaking has slowly grown in cultural impact, eventually culminating in Moonlight’s Oscar win for Best Picture last year. Each year we can now expect LGBT filmmaking not only to be represented, but to actually contain some of the most cutting-edge movies around.

Although you could say that queer representation has been around since Mädchen In Uniform (1931), the relative paucity of gay films in comparison to the monolith of straight filmmaking means that there is still so much left to be explored. As the standard romantic-comedy seems to be running its course, you could easily say queer filmmaking has consistently provided the best romantic stories over the past few years.

Our list of the best LGBT movies of the 21st century below has strived to be inclusive, and therefore there is at least one film that technically satisfies each letter of the LGBT spectrum. In addition, there are not only romance pictures, but movies across the suspense and mystery genres, as well as period dramas and the western. We have also picked movies from a variety of countries to show how the rise in queer cinema can be seen as a universal phenomenon. Please sound off in the comments if you think we have missed anything!

15. The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook, 2016)

Kim Tae-Ri - The Handmaiden

Knottingly-plotted in that uniquely South Korean-way, Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden is a deliciously thrilling film from beginning to end. Based on the novel Fingersmith by Sarah Walters, Chan-wook moves the British Victorian setting to Korea under Japanese rule. From there he creates a psychodrama which knits together the complicated relationship between colonial rule and sexual subjugation. It features a woman who becomes a Japanese heiress’ mistress in order to convince her to marry a conman. → continue…

Huawei Mate 10 Pro camera review

The Mate 10 Pro is Huawei’s new flagship smartphone and the latest in its line of Leica-camera equipped devices. The dual-cam setup combines a 12MP RGB sensor with a 20MP monochrome chip. Like on previous high-end Huaweis, the latter allows for a native black-and-white mode, and Huawei claims that the combination of captured image data from both sensors leads to improved dynamic range and lower noise levels.

Both of the dual-cam lenses feature a fast F1.6 aperture, and optical image stabilization is on board as well. The high-resolution setup allows for what Huawei calls a 2x lossless zoom, and PDAF combined with laser and depth sensors enables fast and precise autofocus. The Mate 10 Pro is capable of recording 4K video at 30 fps and the front camera captures images at an 8MP resolution.

Huawei isn’t relying on hardware alone though—AI and neural networking are applied to improve the quality of the fake bokeh mode, and object recognition for automatic scene selection also relies on some AI magic. Finally, motion detection is being used to reduce motion blur in low light conditions.

Find out how Huawei hardware and software play together and the Mate 10 Pro shapes up in our testing on the following pages.
