2016 Best Picture Oscar Nominees Ranked From Worst To Best

An experiment that was done here on Taste of Cinema was seeing how our staff would order the Best Picture nominees of the latest Oscars ceremony (check it out if you have not already). This poses an interesting study that can be fulfilled: why don’t we take this approach to every year of the Oscars? It would be intriguing to see how spot-on or way-off the Academy has been.

Another aspect that can be tossed in to make things even more interesting is to work backwards; this allows us to work with the fresh and familiar films, and slowly work our way into older territory, which 1) will introduce works to those who are wanting to open up more with their film collection, and 2) will let us see how well films have aged (even ones from not too long ago).

Starting with the 2016 Oscars (which pertains to films from 2015), we have eight nominees that rank from decent to exemplary. We were lucky with this year, because all eight films are at least watchable (we will get into worse territory as we continue this experiment).

While not every great film that year was featured (some that come to mind include “Anomalisa,” “Carol,” “Ex Machina,” “Inside Out,” and then some), we do have a great range of films in terms of genre and style; everything from comedy and action to thriller and as close to arthouse as we can get with a Best Picture nominee (not very, but we can’t be too picky). Here are the eight Best Picture nominees of 2016 ranked.

Slapstick and Zombies: Films That Have Inspired Peter Jackson’s Work

From mindless zombies to Buster Keaton, Peter Jackson has been inspired by them all.

The moment you mention Peter Jackson’s name, you immediately think of what? Middle Earth, the Shire, hobbits, and epic battle sequences between the courageous Fellowship and disgustingly repulsive orcs. But even though The Lord of the Rings series made Jackson one of the most successful directors in the industry, he actually got his start directing low-budget horror comedies, like Bad Taste and Dead Alive, a genre that is clearly miles away from the fantasy adventure films he’s known for today.

This departure from form and content might seem strange at first glance, but once you know which films influenced the work of the New Zealand-born filmmaker, you might get a much clearer understanding of his creative origins. Fandor shares five of these films in the video below.

    The Made in NY Media Center by IFP, in partnership with The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, is accepting applications for the third year of the Made in NY Fellowships. Ten one-year fellowships will be awarded to individuals, small businesses and non-profit organizations in media and technology that value diversity in the industry. The goal of the fellowships is to increase and support diversity in the media and technology industry through a variety of perspectives and experiences.

    The fellowship will provide a twelve-month membership to the Incubator Workspace at the MINY Media Center by IFP, mentorship with industry leaders and Media Center staff, and access to classes and networking events at the Media Center.

    YI releases much-needed firmware update for Yi-M1 mirrorless camera

    When we got our hands on Chinese camera maker YI’s first mirrorless camera, the YI-M1, we didn’t have a lot of positive things to say. Despite a great sensor, the camera was… unrefined. But the company just released a new firmware version for the M1 that promises to smooth out some of its rougher edges.

    Key updates include (much-needed) improved AF speed, the addition of a RAW+JPG shooting option, exposure control in P, A, S and M modes when shooting video, AF/MF control during video capture, and the addition of a histogram in live view while shooting both stills and video.

    We’ve updated our review model to the latest firmware and are taking it for another spin to possibly update our review, but in the meantime, check out the release notes below to see what all YI has improved and fixed on the M1 with this newest update.

    What All Indie Filmmakers Should Be Learning From French Cinema

    The first French film I ever saw in theaters was Swimming Pool by François Ozon, which left me feeling like I just took a masterclass in artistic filmmaking. At that point in my life I had already been heavily inspired and influenced by many other films (mostly American indies), but there was something about this small art film from France that was fundamentally different from what I knew, and I wanted to know why.

    It didn’t take me long to figure out this special quality I found in Swimming Pool wasn’t unique to just this one film. It was something that existed in so many films originating in France – starting with the New Wave of the 1960’s and continuing up until many of today’s modern masterpieces.

    In a lot of ways, it made sense that French films have always been on the cutting edge. After all, the French invented motion pictures and have continued to redefine the medium over the past 100+ years, which has resulted in a legacy of some of the best films ever made.

    They’ve benefited from a very unique ecosystem in which their films have the ability to make their money back domestically (in France), and don’t need to rely heavily on foreign sales in order to make a profit. This has allowed filmmakers from France to tell stories that are highly relevant to their culture and are full of creative risks, as there is no pressure to pander to a more broad global audience.

    That’s not to say that French films have not had a major impact on cinema across the globe, in fact the opposite is true.     The new BenQ SW271 27″ 4K monitor gives photographers full color control

    BenQ has launched a new monitor designed for professional photographers who need both high resolution and extremely accurate colors: the 27″ SW271. This model builds upon the company’s previous SW2700PT display, offering support for HDR10 alongside a 4K 3840 x 2160 resolution and the maker’s AQCOLOR technology.

    With the AQCOLOR tech, users are given total control over the display’s color via hardware calibration and the maker’s Palette Master Elements software. The inclusion of advanced hardware color calibration helps enable the SW271 to meet strict color accuracy standards, according to BenQ, which says its display is ideal for “color-critical applications.”

    Users have the option of viewing content simultaneously in different color spaces via GamutDuo, plus there’s a Hotkey Puck for toggling between the monitor’s various modes, including: 99% Adobe RBG coverage, 100% sRGB/Rec. 709 coverage, 93% DCI-P3 coverage, plus a Black & White option.

    CBS sues photographer for sharing TV show screenshots on social media

    CBS Broadcasting is suing photojournalist Jon Tannen for doing something you (and most people you know) have probably done: sharing screenshots from an old television show on social media. The lawsuit is being characterized a ‘retaliatory strike’ by some, since Tannen filed his own copyright infringement lawsuit against CBS Interactive back in February.

    The whole story came to light on Torrent Freak, and serves as a cautionary tale for photographers who are thinking of pursuing infringement claims against the big studios—CBS, ABC, FOX, Warner Brothers, etc.—in court. Often the evidence in these cases is strong and a settlement is reached, but sometimes… the studios fight back.

    That was the case with Tannen, who sued CBS Interactive in February of this year over the unauthorized use of two copyrighted photos on the website 247sports.com (the second time this had happened). But what might have turned into a quick settlement has instead been met with a countersuit by CBS Broadcasting, who found screenshots from the television show Gunsmoke (1955-1975) on Tannen’s social media.

    The CBS lawsuit brands Tannen a ‘hypocrite’ and seeks $150,000 in damages for willful infringement—the same amount Tannen wants per infringement of his own work.

    “This copyright infringement action arises out of Defendant’s unauthorized use of Plaintiff’s valuable intellectual property,” reads the CBS complaint. “Tannen hypocritically engaged in this act of infringement while simultaneously bringing suit against Plaintiff’s sister company, CBS Interactive Inc., claiming it had violated his own copyright.”

    It will be a while before these lawsuits sort themselves out, but CBS’ retaliation against Tannen is raising eyebrows because this kind of image use is so prevalent online, and almost always assumed to constitute fair use.     Olympus Expands Fast Prime M.Zuiko F1.2 PRO Range

    The new M.Zuiko 17mm and 45mm join the 25mm in the Olympus F1.2 PRO series of fast prime lenses for the Micro Four-Thirds system.

    Olympus has recently announced two new Micro Four-Thirds M.Zuiko lenses, which join the 25mm in the F1.2 PRO series of fast primes. The smaller sensor of the Micro-Four Thirds system always benefits from lenses with a wide maximum aperture, both for improving low-light performance and achieving a shallower depth of field, which makes these two new lenses a great addition for any professional M4/3 shooter.

    M.Zuiko ED 17MM F1.2 PRO

    The 2x crop factor of the Micro Four-Thirds system can make it a bit of a challenge to find an all-round lens at the wider end. With its full-frame equivalence of 34mm, this prime lens’ focal length makes it an ideal choice for a walk-around lens, and suitable for anything from landscape to street photography.

    In terms of build, the M.Zuiko ED 17MM F1.2 PRO features an all-metal construction that offers splash, dust and freeze resistance up to -10C, all in a small and compact body under 10cm in length.

    The lens body also offers a couple of interesting features. A lens function button gives you access to camera controls such as Focus Peaking, AF Stop and Magnify right on the lens. Additionally, you can preset a focus position to which to easily return to from Auto Focus mode.

    The optical design is based around 15 elements in 11 groups, and makes use of the Z Coating Nano to keep unwanted visual artefacts in check. The lens will be available in January 2018 at an estimated retail price of $1,199.99.
