    By V Renée

Find out how engineers at Google designed one of the best smartphone cameras on the market.

Google’s highly anticipated smartphones, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, are nearing their November 19th release date and though they come with some impressive features, like 5″ and 6″ 1OLED display and built-in Google Lens (which is so friggin’ cool), one of their best features is the beefed-up camera. DxOMark has given it a score of 98, making it officially the top-performing smartphone camera that it has ever tested.

So, what’s underneath the hood of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL’s camera? Well in this video by Nat of Nat and Friends, who is also a Google employee, takes you inside her employer’s headquarters to learn about how the company engineered its mobile device to make one of the best smartphone cameras on the market.

All 9 Best Director Oscar Winners From The 1980s Ranked From Worst To Best

    By Rob Williams

Widely held to be one of the worst decades in Western Cinema. Studio driven blockbusters took over from the Director driven New Hollywood films of the 70s. This is seen by the top ten grossing film of the decade; only one (E.T. The Extra Terrestrial) is not part of a multi-million dollar franchise.

It was a decade of differences in that there are only nine entries due one of our chaps winning twice and America doesn’t quite have a stranglehold on producing great directors with only six of the nine being born in the USA. Also this decade has three of the six men best known as actors who went on to win the Best Director Oscar.

This is also the decade that brought us Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Back To The Future, Beverly Hills Cop, and re-launched Batman. However, apart from a couple of nominations for Steven Spielberg, none of those film’s directors had a look in at the best director slot.

So… are these all art school efforts that everybody claims to have seen but either never did or secretly hated or can they share a bill with the latest multiplex stuffer.

    9. James L Brooks – Terms Of Endearment

James L Brooks is probably best known for being a writer rather than a director; he has 41 writing credits compared to 6 for directing. After dropping out of NYU, he went to work for CBS. Initially as an usher but eventually going on to write links for the news broadcasts. Later he moved to Los Angeles and wound up creating and writing ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ as well as the spin offs ‘Rhoda’ and ‘Lou Grant’. Other TV work included ‘Taxi’, and ‘The Tracey Ullman Show’ which led to the one the whole world has seen his → continue…

A Vlog That Pays the Bills – with Jehu Garcia – ON THE GO – Episode 71

    By Fabian Chaundy

    Jehu Garcia

This week on ON THE GO, we dive a little deeper into the environmental focus of the Jehu Garcia YouTube channel.

Jehu Garcia showed interest in electric automobiles the moment he started looking to purchase a new car – that’s when he first came across Tesla and the big advances that were being made in the e-car industry. However, upon discovering the long waiting lists for some of the Tesla models, Jehu decided to embark upon a different quest.

Inspired by his love of the VW Hippie Van, Jehu went on to document his journey of converting one of these iconic cars to an electric motor, acquiring thousands of followers along the way. His exploration of this side of technology has recently also led him to document the rise of the Power Pack – the battery of the future that could power an entire house or a business.

The case of Jehu Garcia is truly an example of successfully using your filmmaking skills to pursue your own particular interests with great results. This one is certainly worth a watch!

The 10 Best Keanu Reeves Movies You Need To Watch

    By Hasena Ali

Keanu Charles Reeves is an actor, director, producer and musician. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Reeves was raised in Canada with his family and had ambitions to become a hockey player. However, after an injury that prevented him from continuing playing hockey, Reeves turned into acting by appearing in theatre productions, commercials and television shows.

In 1985, Reeves made his feature debut in One Step Away, a coming-of-age film where he portrays a troubled teen named Ron Petrie. He featured in other dramas such as Youngblood, River’s Edge and Dangerous Liaisons before finding success in science-fiction comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure in 1989.

Since then, Reeves has consistently built a fascinating body of work for nearly three decades by portraying interesting characters in highly entertaining films, which in total have grossed nearly $2 billion in box office sales. His international success as an actor has earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005 and was honoured at the Deauville film festival ten years later.

    10. The Neon Demon (2016)

Nicholas Winding Refn’s recent film, The Neon Demon is known for its disturbing and violent content, combined with colourful cinematography and synthetic electronica score. The psychological horror tells the story of Jesse (Elle Fanning), a sixteen-year-old girl who moves to Los Angeles to pursue a career in modelling.

Jesse’s innocence and natural beauty fascinates many people from the fashion world, leading a successful start to her career. However, two older models Gigi (Bella Heathcote) and Sarah (Abbey Lee) are jealous of Jesse and will not stop to get what she has.

Keanu Reeves plays a small role in The Neon Demon as Hank, a grumpy man who manages the motel where Jesse is staying. The character of Hank is a huge contrast to Reeves’ past roles → continue…

    Gudsen Moza Air gimbal review

    Gudsen Moza Air
$599, ($798 for the thumb controller kit)
    www.Gudsen.com

There are whole lot of things about shooting video that are difficult, such as getting to grips with the specific terminology, mastering audio, understanding input/output files types and finding your way around new software. All of this stuff can be learnt, but what I struggle with most, and which just wrecks most of the videos I shoot, is just holding the camera steady. This beats me even when I’m standing still, but it destroys every beautiful or dramatic scene I encounter if I have to so much as pan across a view let alone actually move my feet as well. I can achieve smooth motion sometimes, but with such a degree of concentration that everything else goes out of the window. In short, I find this aspect of shooting movies almost impossible to overcome.

The Moza Air is designed for compact system cameras and small to medium sized DSLRs

I guess I’m not entirely alone here, as there are now quite a number of mid-sized gimbals designed to help videographers achieve smooth footage when they are moving with a handheld camera. The Zhiyun Crane has been a popular option for some time, but newer on the scene is the Gudsen Moza Air.

Gudsen had mostly produced gimbals for small devices and mobile phones, but has recently moved into support for larger, heavier cameras. The Moza Air is designed for compact system cameras and small to medium sized DSLRs with a maximum payload of 5.5lbs/2.5kg – a restriction which actually only really excludes top-end professional models.

    Specification

The Gudsen Moza Air is motorized gimbal platform-on-handle designed to create smooth motion and steadier stationary views for videographers. It is made from aluminum tubing and weighs 2.4lb/1.1kg when it is all → continue…
